Unlike in previous years, 8 May 2026 (Victory Day) and 15 September 2026 (Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows) are not public holidays this year.

What does this mean in practice?

Under the current provisions of the Public Holidays Act and the Labour Code, the following rules apply to these two days:

  • Normal working arrangements: 8 May 2026 and 15 September 2026 are considered working days.
  • Obligation to work: The employer orders work as on any other day, and employees are obliged to carry it out.
  • Entitlement to additional pay: Although these are not public holidays, they are still considered public holidays. Employees who work on these days are entitled to additional pay for working on a public holiday under the Labour Code (or compensatory time off by agreement).
  • Taking annual leave: If an employee does not wish to work on these days, they must, as a rule, request annual leave. This day will then be deducted from their total annual leave entitlement (it is not treated as time off due to a public holiday). The employer may also require an employee to take annual leave on this day.
